JLPT Test Schedule 2025

Second Session: December 7, 2025 (Worldwide)

Test Levels

N1 (Advanced)

The ability to understand Japanese used in a variety of circumstances.

  • Can read and understand complex text with abstract topics
  • Can comprehend native-speed conversations
  • Approximately 2,000+ study hours required
  • Vocabulary: 10,000+ words
  • Kanji: 2,000+ characters

N2 (Pre-Advanced)

The ability to understand Japanese used in everyday situations and in a variety of circumstances to a certain degree.

  • Can read and understand nearly all Japanese used in daily situations
  • Can follow most spoken conversations
  • Approximately 1,000-1,200 study hours required
  • Vocabulary: 6,000+ words
  • Kanji: 1,000+ characters

N3 (Intermediate)

The ability to understand Japanese used in everyday situations to a certain degree.

  • Can read and understand everyday materials
  • Can handle basic communication in daily life
  • Approximately 700-800 study hours required
  • Vocabulary: 3,500+ words
  • Kanji: 650+ characters

N4 (Basic)

The ability to understand basic Japanese.

  • Can read and understand basic passages
  • Can handle basic conversations
  • Approximately 400-500 study hours required
  • Vocabulary: 1,500+ words
  • Kanji: 300+ characters

N5 (Entry)

The ability to understand some basic Japanese.

  • Can read and understand basic expressions and sentences
  • Can handle basic greetings and conversations
  • Approximately 250-300 study hours required
  • Vocabulary: 800+ words
  • Kanji: 100+ characters
